The self-tanning effect of DHA is due to the colouring of the upper layer of the epidermis. It reacts with the free amines and peptides of the skin proteins (keratin) in the horny layer, producing a natural reaction that tans the surface of the skin without the need for the normal tanning mechanism (melanin) to be activated.
ERYTHRULOSE COMPLEX Natural self-tanner

This molecule, extracted from corn, provides a long-lasting, natural-looking tan and a softening effect on the skin. It acts by reacting with the amines, peptides, and amino acids in the skin's stratum corneum, leading to the production of brown compounds, melanoidins.
